Retirement can be a blast, Greek Style!
When you retire to a sleepy greek island at the age of sixty five, the last thing you think is going to happen is that one of your life’s great passions is going to be re invigorated, but that’s exactly what happened to me.
I’d retired from my job as a teacher, and I’d managed to save up just enough money to be able to rent my house out back home and buy myself a lovely little sugar cube house on the beautiful island of Kos. My plans were to read a bit, drink a bit, sleep a bit, swim a bit and not much else. I’d worked hard all of my life, so the next tweny years or so would be about total relaxation!
For the first few months this is exactly how things panned out, but after that I got restless. I started to find new and interesting places to go, and that included exploring beyond the local bars at night.
I found this great little club that played old timer Greek music and I was hooked from the start! In my youth I had been a mean drummer, but I hadn’t picked up a pair of sticks in years. I was so taken in by the music I was hearing though, that I was soon chatting to the locals about playing in one of their bands. The local guys, nursing me through my broken Greek, taught me all about the ancient greek musicians and taught me how to play in their style. I studied their music a lot, ranging from the classics, to the works of the contemporary famous greek musicians until I was fully versed.
Now? No rest for me! I play three times a week in my local band, and I am happier than ever!
