Tips On How To Improve Singing

With proper breathing you can increase your endurance and improve breath control so that you have a wider vocal range. You will need to breathe deeply through your stomach to get the floating sound quality and achieve the high notes. When we are children, many of us tend to follow faulty breathing habits. And we take that into our singing as well when we grow up.
Proper breathing does not involve the chest and the shoulders so any movement in these organs indicates faulty breathing. Most people will not follow deep abdominal breathing for fear of looking fat. However you need to understand that in order to achieve the really high notes you will have to breathe through the abdomen.
It is not uncommon to hear people saying that loud breathing is the correct form of deep breathing. Noisy breathing means that the air passage is being blocked causing incorrect and improper breathing. Proper breathing is when you inhale deeply yet silently.
For deep breathing you need to make sure that you inhale in sips instead of gulping the air. Your stomach should move effortlessly with each inhalation. The following exercises will help you to develop the habit of correct breathing.
Breathing In:
Start by lying flat on your back. Next take a deep breath and feel your hest expand then your abdomen as the air travels from your mouth to the bottom of your lungs. Feel your chest and diaphragm expanding but make sure to not move your shoulder muscles. It is also important that while breathing deeply your stomach muscles should be relaxed allowing more room for the lungs to expand.
Exhale and try another deep breath this time once again feel your chest and stomach expand with no movement of the shoulders. If your shoulders move when you breathe it would indicate that you are not breathing correctly. Ideally, the chest, the stomach and the diaphragm should expand. Feel the muscles at the sides of rib cage expand. This is the correct way of breathing for a singer.
Exhalation Exercise:
In this exercise you will try to move the flame of a candle with your breath so start by placing a lighted candle 8-9 inches away from your face.
Practice the deep inhalation that you have learnt in the previous activity letting your chest and stomach expand but not moving your shoulders.
Exhale letting out the air in the direction of the flame, bending it in the process not flickering it.
When you exhale you will have to let out the air in a steady stream otherwise the flame will flicker instead of bending. It is also important to keep a track of the number of minutes for which you can keep the flame bent.
These exercises will help you to achieve the breath control needed to sing a long phrase or to keep up the high note for a long time. The important thing is to try and continuously increase the time of exhalation.
