Some Great Artists That Are Not Well Appreciated

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

A snare hit, thumping bass, a beautiful melody that’s cuts through your ear and infects your heart. We’ve all uttered the next few words. “Who is that?” These are a handful of artist that fly a little bit below the radar. Some of these you know, some you don’t. But you would be well served to better acquaint yourself with these bands. By the way, the music of all of these artists can be found on  internet radio.

Nico: Best known for being a drug riddled performer, the fact is that she performed some really terrific music. Listen to “These Days” off of the late 60’s album “Chelsea Girls.” With song contributions from a teenage Jackson Browne and a love smitten Bob Dylan, the album evokes a warmth and elegance unmatched by many that followed.

Syd Barrett: Almost every music fan in general knows Pink Floyd. And some of you may be familiar with the group’s leader in its first few years. But Syd Barrett is most noteworthy as a accomplished solo artist. He released two albums in 1970, “The Madcap Laughs” and “Barrett.” They were sparse, some say incomplete, but listen to “Terrapin” (off of the more superior “Madcap” album) and nothing exudes psychedelia better. Every one from Bowie to Ray Davies cites Syd as essential, and for good reason.

The Velvet Underground: Words cannot describe the first time I heard “Pale Blue Eyes,” or “Sweet Jane.” These songs and this group are classic. From their pop minimalist origins, they do not disappoint the most discerning of listeners. Although it is best to avoid any material created during their reunion in the 1990’s. The Velvet Underground is a fantastic rock and roll band that Americans never fully understood or appreciated.

The Meters: Ultra funky group led by Art Nellville of The Nellville Brothers. Since they’re inception in the 60’s The Meters have laid down the funk like no other. Listen to “Cissy Strut” and you will understand. Although largely instrumental, that should not stop anybody from checking them out.

The Dictators: Having created what many consider to be the first “New York Punk Album”, The Dictators exude a free flowing artsy type of style. They were considered quite abnormal in their era, now we can glance back and appreciate how talented they were. They sometimes considered childish or evocative, but is was all in good humor. And you cannot deny that catchy music! You will be able to locate ‘The Dictators” on  free online music.

The Cramps: Formed by Lux Interior in the late 70’s, “The Cramps” recorded some of the most vibrant rock music of the twentieth century. Think Hillbilly, swamp, punk, boogie (all compliments). If it wasn’t for front man Lux’s tragic death in February of 2009, they would still be playing somewhere in the country pleasing all fans, from punk to rockabilly.

Never Too Late For Adult Flute Lessons

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

There is nothing wrong with taking adult flute lessons. It is a universal belief that adults find it hard to learn new things especially when it comes to learning music. However, not all late bloomers would agree. Adult flute lessons can be a rewarding experience for people who haven’t been endowed with enough opportunities to discover or hone their musical talents during their childhood years.

You will find that there are other misconceptions about learning flute as an adult aside from this. Take heed of these myths which can prevent you from getting the most out of your adult flute lessons.

It is now been proven that learning a new musical talent is not dependent on the age of the person. The reason why many people associate musical talent with childhood training is because many musicians have been trained early. Childhood training isn’t necessarily the biggest factor in learning music, but those who have been trained in their early years would definitely have an advantage.

Why do some adults quit their adult flute lessons? Aiming too high at the first instance is one reason. You are likely to get disappointed if you think that you’ll see notable improvements every time you finish one flute class. There would be days in which you’ll feel that no significant improvements have been made. However, this is just a normal part of music education. Other factors like health and attitude also reflect on the the musical performance. So just give your music education enough time to work.

Hard work and dedication are truly commendable but if you give yourself too much pressure you will likely just burn out. It is not advisable for beginners to follow the learning pace of professional musicians. Going slow is sometimes the right way to learn. If you set too high an expectation for yourself, you leave yourself open to a lot of disappointments. It is better to enjoy the process of learning rather than set unreasonable objectives. Be patient and follow the normal pace of adult flute lessons, otherwise, you might be tempted to quit early.

Working on your flute 24/7 is not something you should plan on. It is perfectly acceptable to take rests from music class so that your brain will be more able to process what you have been learning. Plus, being rested makes the brain take in more facts easily.

On the other hand, it doesn’t mean that practicing more is bad. Just do not overdo it. The important thing is that you make realistic goals in the development of your musical talent. You can play longer hours, but choose shorter pieces so you wouldn’t be exhausted easily. Another way to ease the pressure from adult flute lessons is to measure them based on the number of pieces you practice rather than the actual time you spend.

It is hard to practice flute if you are afraid of how the people around you would react upon hearing you play. This attitude is counter productive and should not be allowed to continue. Do your best and look at the feedback objectively. Furthermore, aiming for perfection could ironically lead to failure if you lose sight of the essence of art. Music after all is for everyone and not just for the naturally gifted.

What Does It Take To Learn Flute?

Saturday, December 25th, 2010

Is it possible to learn flute by oneself? There are a few flutists who were able to achieve excellence without formal training. However, getting help from flute teachers is not a bad idea, especially if you are just starting. Although self-learning can save you time and money, going to classes to learn flute can provide both professional guidance and motivation.

Beginners will first have to learn how to blow into the flute and where to position the fingers. Blowing into the flute’s mouth hole creates a vibration, which in turn produces sound. The intensity of the vibration is determined by the length of the column it travels in the flute. To produce the desired tones, certain key holes have to be covered by the fingers.

Working With the Mouth Hole and Finger Keys

Aside from the blow hole, the flute has a set of key holes along its main body. If you blow into the flute with these holes uncovered, the flute will produce its highest tone. If all the key holes are covered, however, what will come out will only be low tones.

Proper blowing on the flute is achieved when you place the lower lip lightly on the edge of the mouth hole. However, when using a thick-walled flute, your lips should be pressed harder against the head joint. Blowing hard is not necessary; the desired tone is easier to achieve when you blow gently across the mouth hole.

Make sure that the mouth hole faces upward and your head is held straight up as you blow. Avoid curling your lip or pulling them up when you are blowing. Your lower lip is placed more or less one-fourth of the way over the mouth hole.

If you hear no sound coming from the flute, then you can try pulling your lips back. Change the angle at which your breath enters the hole. You may also change the air pressure and the length at which your lower lip extends over the mouth hole.

People with larger lips may have to exert more effort to learn flute. A sizable protrusion on the upper lip can block the passage of sufficient air into the hole, splitting the breath to the left and right. The answer to this is to pull the top lip back. If the desired tone is not yet achieved despite forming the right flute embouchere, another instrument may be considered like oboe, clarinet or saxophone. This, however, should not pose a problem to the ordinary flute learner. You only find it in about one of 300 flute students.

Finger Positioning

People with larger lips may have to exert more effort to learn flute. The fingering system establishes the position each finger should be on to produce a particular note. Flutists also follow a standard finger positioning. The left hand normally holds the front of the instrument near the end. As for the left hand, the index finger should be on the second key. Place the middle finger on the fourth key and the ring finger on the fifth.

The pinky finger should be assigned to the longer key sticking out from the instrument, while the thumb is placed on the key on the side. You will place the index, middle and ring fingers of the right hand on the three keys near the end of the flute. The right pinky finger you will place on the key at the top of the foot joint. The right thumb will be at the under belly of the flute.

Drumming Your Way To The Top

Friday, December 24th, 2010

This might not be something you want to admit to, but have you ever caught yourself playing the air drums to a song on your iPod while walking to work or on the bus? Do you always reach out for the drumsticks whenever you and your friends are playing Rock Band? Have you day dreamed of your 15 minutes of YouTube fame playing a crazy drum solo you record at home? Well I hate to break it to you, especially since you probably don’t realize it, but you have the DRUM BUG. Air drummers from all over the world have this and once you have it, there is no way you are even going to get rid of it. Why would you want to?

Beginner drum lessons have always been very expensive. Not only are the lessons expensive but buying a beginner drum kit isn’t cheap either. A good set can easily cost more then $1000 dollars. So what are your options?

Well first of all, never pay full  retail price on a drum set. Check your local paper classifieds and also check online at websites such as craigslist and kjiji for a used drum set. With a bit of searching you should find a quality used kit for less then it would cost you at the local music store. Thanks to video games like Rock Band there are more people giving up on learning the drums after they begin when they realize it’s not as easy as the game Be sure to find a drum kit you can pick up locally since they are large and paying for shipping often defeats the purpose of buying used.

Second, go online and look for drum instruction dvd. There are several of dvd courses available with professionals walking you through the basic beats and teaching you techniques that would cost you hundreds of dollars if done with private lessons.

These are good solid tips, which should help you out to get started on learning the drums. One final very important tip is you may want to invest in some sound proofing, especially if you’re living in an apartment or a condo. Nothing will make this experience less enjoyable then an angry neighbor hitting the wall or worse knocking on your door.

Minneapolis Piano Lessons On Arpeggios Lets Beginners Show Off

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Learning piano for beginners isn’t easy. Not just pianists, but for any musician learning a new instrument, the start is the hardest time. Piano lessons might help big-time, but still the fingers just won’t do what the mind tells them. It takes some time for real dexterity to show up.

I should know, I have been playing guitar for over 30 years, but have only lately started working on playing piano. I haven’t taken piano lessons (who has the time?), but I hope I can work it out myself. I do have a truly solid music theory background, which I think makes a huge difference. I take a look at the piano keys and I am aware what they are and what to do to build chords and scales, and create wonderful music. But…the hands! They simply won’t listen. So I play simple piano scales and exercises that sound boring but are useful to get my skill started.

I’d like to have something to demonstrate for my efforts apart from these simple patterns, and I found something today that is simply the thing: a showy trick that even a beginner can do to give a glimpse of what the future may be like if I keep practicing the piano.

I am a webmaster by profession and recently made a web site with a friend who is a piano teacher. His name is Christopher Schlegel, and he has put some excellent lessons together on the site, which is known as PianoTricks.com. One lesson particularly is called “Chord Arpeggiation Trick” and it is available at this url:

http://www.pianotricks.com/lesson.php?input=28.

The lesson consists of a video example, and some explanation. The lesson is completely free and accessible without website registration or anything like that. The fantastic thing about this lesson, and the reason I am writing about it, is this: it takes the simple skills that I, being a piano beginner, have and lets me show off a little bit but doing something the pros do: arpeggiate a chord.

Before you get frightened, arpeggios are the same as chords, except in an arpeggio, the chord is played one note at any given time, instead of all notes at the same time. This makes a really fluid sound, but also really consonant, because the notes flow together (they’re part of the same chord “family”). This also makes it just a little easier to play, since you don’t have to time all the fingers hitting at the same time (like in a normal chord).

The trick you’ll view in the video is that Christopher plays a simple major chord with both hands repeating the same chord up the piano octave by octave. The outcome sounds like a flourishing move which expert pianists make; only it’s so easy to do. Try it on your own and see. It has really made my day as a beginning piano student to try this lesson. I hope you get a lot out of it as well.
