Legendary Michael Jackson

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Michael Jackson was born in Indiana, USA on 29th August, 1958. This American superstar entertained the audiences for many decades. Michael was a musical prodigy, with exceptional singing and dancing talent. Single sequined white glove, moonwalk, high pitched voice, and white socks with black shoes became the trade mark of Michael Jackson. He was undoubtedly one of the most popular and successful pop stars of 80s. With stunning musical versatility, eye-popping dance moves and tons of sheer star power, he dominated the charts for many years. Album Thriller was his best-known accomplishments, and was largest-selling album of all times.

Michael Jackson had been influenced by the work of musicians like James Brown, Little Richards, Diana Ross, Gene Kelly, David Ruffin, Sammy Davis and Bees Gees. He also admired the performances by English music hall tradition such as Charlie Chaplin and Benny Hill.

Life of Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson started his career early, along with his old brothers, and soon emerged as lead singer of the group. He easily impressed audiences with the range and depth of his emotions. His calling progressed very gradually, and he was the first black creative person who found the stardom on MTV.

Michael Jackson lived a lonely and sad life, and he always felt that no one is able to understand him. He had a tough childhood, and felt that his father was always very stern and hard who would beat him up often prior to stage performances. He entered entertainment industry when he was six years old, and regretted the fact that he could never enjoy fun things that kids of his age do, such as parties, sleepover, trick-or-treat and so on. He always longed for true friends, and often wandered on the streets in the night, looking for someone to talk to. He confessed to crying many times in the privacy of his house. Michael Jackson loved children, and spent almost all his life helping million of children all across the globe. However, he always felt that media exploited his concern for children, and made him the vulnerable target.

Despite all his accomplishments, media always focused on his eccentricities, and portrayed him as the molester. In 1993, he was accused of molesting a teenager boy. Though he denied the charges and tried the out-of-court settlement, all his attempts failed to restore his image. In 1994, he married Lisa Presley, the daughter of King Elvis Presley. Many people believed that it was just a show by Jackson to end the accusations of him being gay.

Towards the end of his life, Michael Jackson had become the favorite punch line for media, and was always surrounded by troubles. On June 25th, 2009, Michael Jackson collapsed due to cardiac arrest, and was rushed to UCLA medical center. There, he was pronounced dead at the age of 50. At that time, he was rehearsing and training for the upcoming comeback set for final performances. Police decided to treat his death as homicide after they found several drugs in his body. To date, police is conducting investigations on Conrad Murray, Jackson’s personal doctor. One of the greatest music heroes of the century had to face a very unfortunate and untimely death. At the time of his death, he was known more for his wild spending, erratic behavior and several plastic surgeries, rather than for his music.

His death came as a major shock for all Michael Jackson fans throughout the world. July 7th, 2009 was the day of Jackson’s memorial, and it took place at Los Angeles Staple Center. On 3rd September 2009, his body was finally put to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial after much debate with his family.

Michael Jackson was a great artist, and will always live in the hearts of his million fans who have undying love for him.

Don’t think when buying a good quality guitar about the extra cents you have to pay in order to get a good instrument because in this way you will make progress easier and in a more pleasant way. Also, try to practice in a quiet space and try to keep your mobile phone or other gadgets at distance. In this way you won’t get distracted from your practice time even if it doesn’t last more than 30 minutes.

One of the most important parts when learning to play the guitar is to know everything about it: what each part is called, the strings names and the right position to hold it. Have you ever noticed that every guitar has its acoustic and sounds different from others}? After you found out everything you could about your guitar, you will surely feel more confident and eager to play this instrument.

Be realistic in the learning process and avoid having higher expectations than you normally should. You surely won’t be a rock star after a single practicing day. The key to success is practice. Make sure that it won’t pass a day without that you have practiced; only practice will help you to make progress.

Gather your friends and family together and play to them the song you know. This will be a very encouraging experience which will also determine you to learn other songs too.

What Type of Acoustic Guitar Instruction Should You go With?

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

So, you want to learn to play the acoustic guitar?

First off, congratulations! There are so many benefits of guitar playing. It can serve as an enjoyable hobby or even evolve into a full time job of playing in a band. Some people prefer the acoustic guitar over the electric. Why? Because the feel and the sound is perfect for any setting and doesn’t drain the vocals out. It’s also easier to handle and transport.

Learning to play is a bit difficult at first, but it will become much easier in time. After a couple of years of regular practice, you’ll be playing with ease!

It’s not hard. Just follow these 5 acoustic guitar instruction steps:

1.    Get yourself an acoustic guitar that is comfortable. You can start out with an inexpensive one and buy a more expensive one after you become more experienced.

2.    Pick a certain time of day to play. You need to set aside a half hour in which you do nothing but play. Don’t play for any longer than an hour since it is easy to pick up bad habits. You should play 5-7 days a week.

3.    Grab your guitar, place it in the proper position, and allow yourself to become comfortable with the strings. Pay attention to how each string sounds. Strike one at a time, working your way down individually and then back up.

4.    As you learn acoustic guitar basics and become more comfortable with each string, shift your attention to the acoustic guitar’s neck. Practice playing the notes individually. Check that your left hand is positioned correctly and pay attention to how the note sounds.

5.    Gradually evolve into playing the chords individually. Start with simple 2 or 3 fingered chords and go from there. The “D Minor”, “A Minor”, and “E Minor” chords are the best place to start.
Beginners often seek further advice by consulting with an instructor and engaging in a lesson or two every week. However, there are some downsides to this. For one, private lessons are rather costly and time consuming. You will have to set aside two to five days a week to travel and meet with your instructor. Then you’ll need to set extra time aside to practice with an instructor.

The instructor will work with you personally during your acoustic guitar lessons, which is great, but many of them care more about money than anything else. Also, they work with many different beginning players and aren’t quite as “personal” as you would expect them to be. It can vary between teachers.

Some newbies also struggle learning and playing in front of someone else, especially when that person is more advanced. They would prefer playing on their own and alone. Plus, playing the acoustic guitar with a private teacher can be rather expensive—$150+ a month or so, for only two lessons a week! Still, trying to learn on your own can be extremely difficult.

This is where print and online acoustic guitar lessons can come in handy. You can a great deal from Jamorama Acoustic. It’s a video course that provides all the techniques, material, tricks, and lessons for getting started.

The nice thing about these private courses is that it teaches you all you would learn from a private teacher, anyway.  They also only cost a one-time fee, and you can use and practice with the course on your own time.  The result is a much more time and cost effective lesson plan which is just as strong as what you would get from a more expensive private lesson. Plus, you’ll be able to rewind and fast-forward!

You should definitely invest in a home study course, rather than spend $15 or more per lesson. Although not everyone will agree with this, beginner acoustic guitar lessons on the web are the best. If you think you’d be comfortable learning with instruction videos and exercises to practice with, then a home study course may be the perfect choice for you!

In conclusion, it all depends on how much money and time you’re willing to invest in learning the acoustic guitar.

Introduction to Beginners’ Drum Lessons

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Drum is considered as one of the most interesting musical instruments. Once you learn to play this instrument then you really enjoy it. If you are a beginner then here are some tips for you:

  • Try to learn all types of drums: there are many varieties of the drum but you must try to learn all of them. This is not difficult because once you have the basic knowledge then you can easily play any kind of drum.
  • Learn how to hold the drum sticks properly. Sticks are the the most essential part of the drum set and having complete proficiency in using them is highly important. There are two acceptable methods or ways to hold the drum sticks properly. According to the first method, you should hold them in your fist and should leave atleast an inch at the bottom of the stick. At this point, your thumbs should be pointing towards the end of the sticks. This is the most popular method of holding the sticks. The other method, is to hold the sticks like you would a pen or pencil when writing. This method is most popular among jazz players.
  • Make use of your hands and use them to drum if there are no drums available. Using your hands only, try to drum the eight notes pattern as follows “1&2&3&4&”.
  • Before trying your luck on a new drum, you should practice first on a second hand drum. Generally a three piece set is considered appropriate if you are a beginner.
  • Try to have an drum instructor in Singapore at your initial stages to guide you through the entire process and could help you in trying with variety of drumsticks. If the drum teacher is not available then you can take help of a video or some book.
  • Learn and practice the drums properly: while practicing you should be serious and must choose a quiet place to practice so that nobody can disturb you. Make sure you devote your maximum time. During the initial stages play slow beats. Besides this, also put your metronome at a very slow speed. You should play only when you are completely relaxed. Make proper use of your hands so that you can play all the simple beats. Also make it a habit to count out loud while playing. It is not necessary to do so but it should be done at the time of practicing and learning.
  • You should learn how you can close the high hat by using your left foot in case you are playing with your hands also. It may seem to be difficult, but in actuality it is not. As you become more of an expert in playing the drums, all these nifty techniques will come naturally to you. Now try to play using only your right hand, the straight eight notes.
  • Attempt to get familiar with playing with just he right foot and the right hand working, and leave the left hand idle. This helps all your limbs to move at the same time while your muscles are also moving.

How To Teach Children Flute

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

These days, the popular trend is to learn as many instruments as you can, with the flute chiefly among them. Today parents are also encouraging their children to learn flute in Singapore and to take part in the competitions worldwide. Before buying a new flute for your child, make the arrangements first to hire the best flute instructor so that you can give your child the best flute lessons.

The easiest way to impart your child flute lessons is by the help of a flute teacher. Before selecting a best flute teacher in Singapore you should carry out proper survey and consult all the references. There should be no compromise while selecting the flute instructor. You should only accept an instructor with enough experience as well as possessing exceptional education.

It is necessary to provide the complete instruction set to the child before he attempts to assemble or play the instrument. They should know how to reach the keys without any strain in their neck and hands.

A flute with a curved head joint is also recommended by most teachers to beginners. Many times it has been observed that the smaller children find it hard to make the switch to the straight head joint quickly enough. But it becomes easy as the child grows more and more in terms of the stature and he musical ability. A flute novice should always be conscious of the right posture when playing the instrument. This is something that the flute instructor should be teaching them.

A C flute is considered as a best-known flute for the beginners. There are many other flutes like brass flute and an alto flute that are included in the family of the flutes. At the start, the children are given only the C flute for them to use to practice the notes and acquire some experience. Once the child becomes adept at it, he then will be made to practice on the more advanced flutes mentioned above.

Below are  some useful tips that parents need to follow before allowing their children to play the flute:

  • First of all, you must buy the beginner’s flute book if you are not able to select the instructor for your child. One very helpful book will be the “First Division Band Method” written by Fred Weber. Besides this, parents can also give their children books that teach about the fingering techniques and act as a fingering guide. You can also search for various books on the scales.
  • After getting the book, the children should be encouraged to practice and to make noises from their mouth piece. This method is also used to blow across the holes that are present in the flute. Pursing the lips loosely helps to make a low tone and pursing them tight and then blowing them sharply makes a kind of a higher tone.
  • The fingering charts that are provided in various books can be used by the children to practice the scales.

After having practiced without the flute, the children should now be assisted with practicing their first song, this time using the flute.

Identifying a Perfect Pitch

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

The ability to identify or replicate a certain tone without the need to refer to an external source is commonly labeled as perfect pitch or absolute pitch (AP). For an excellent course on learning perfect pitch, check out this perfect pitch review.

It can be done verbally or through other codes like sensorimotor responses or auditory imagery. What this means is that without the need for a musical code, a musician from an auditory tradition is capable of demonstrating perfect pitch. A number of persons are capable of demonstrating both absolute and relative pitch. When trying to listen and practice music, both are equally important. Still, there are those who lean towards different strategies to hone those skills.

It is important to note that absolute pitch is not absolute, meaning those who possess this quality do so in different degrees. There are those who can name a specific pitch played on an instrument (A, G#, Gm). Other abilities identifying a perfect pitch include:

· Identifying tones of a chord or a tonal mass

· Sing a precise pitch without using an external source as standard.

· Identify and name the common noises heard everyday

· Without the need for an external reference, can name a key of a tone just by hearing the sound

Evidence shows that most absolute listeners were able to identify the C-major tone without any problem and more quickly compared to the other five “black key tones” except for B. A research performed by Dutch non-musicians have reached the conclusion that most people are more inclined to use the C-major during an ordinary speech, more prominently on syllables that speak of emphasis.

Still, keep in mind that an absolute pitch is not a vital ingredient for the development of musical talent. Although musicians and composers disagree in the importance of absolute pitch to overall musical quality, the fact is, history has been unable to prove whether notable musicians and composers possess absolute pitch or not. During the Baroque and Classical eras, Mozart is the only one thought of to have perfect pitch as supported by historical evidence. It was said that the famous musician developed the talent when he was 3 years old. Beethoven is also thought to have perfect pitch, especially since the music he produced – even after being deaf – were still exceptional.

At six years of age, Nicolas Slonimsky was hailed to have perfect pitch, leading his aunt – Isabelle Vengerova – to give him music lessons. Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett’s story was the same, with his parents discovering his ability when he was 3 years old.

The ability to transpose is also believed to be influenced by absolute pitch with musicians more concerned with a specific note rather than the characteristics shown by the notation.

For some people, cultural exposure is one of the factors affecting a person’s absolute pitch.

One example of this is the European society which has produced very little individuals with absolute pitch, so much so that musicians who claim to possess the ability are initially doubted.

Write Your Own Song

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

You need a special gift for a special person. Maybe you just feel good and you gotta say it so that others will feel good too.  How can you say it in the best possible way?

Have you ever felt as if words just don’t cut it to express your feelings? That might be life’s deepest frustration. When you need a way to connect, put it in a song. Find a place to be alone and let it out – don’t let anything distract you. A verse-chorus structure goes best with a happy song. To keep things focused, that’s what we are going to write.

Melody and Lyrics are the two components of a song.

1) The Melody – This is a living, breathing thing The air around you sings with melodies. Catch one. Let your imagination snare one and dance with it.

-Just a few notes will come first. Don’t try to force a melody, release it. The first notes lead to more which wants to complete the phrase. Play with a few modifying variations.

- Use a recording device and record the best ones. Hum the melody or sing la la la. You don’t have to be able to write music, but if you don’t keep a record, you’ll forget your melody like you do a dream.

– Even if you’ve never written a note before, you know how to compose a melody, you don’t need training for that. You don’t need to study music theory – if you can talk, you know how a musical phrase is constructed.

2) The structure of a song is determined by the lyrics. A verse-chorus structure is the best one for an upbeat song. It’s also the easiest form to write for because it is the most natural one.

-The chorus should be written first. That is the main idea, the point, the focus of the song. This is the core of what you want to say, It’s important to use active descriptive, colorful verbs and specific descriptions, following the line and rhythm of the melody.

- The best title for your song is the first two or three words of the chorus. People remember, or should remember, those words and will automatically use them to refer to a song. The chorus drives home the point of the lyric and it is repeated after each verse.

- The chorus is explained by the verses. Each verse explains the chorus a little more. The melodies of the verse and the chorus should compliment each other and the same goes for the lyric

- A song lyric is not a poem. Focus on being direct with just one idea in your lyric, keep it very simple. Each verse elaborates a little more on the chorus. Whether or not it rhymes is up to you but it should follow the rhythm set by the melody.

- The words should follow the line of the music; when the music goes up, the words should be increasing in emotion and excitement. For that reason, the chorus usually begins on a high note. A rising melody puts emphasis on what is being said in the lyric,

Study the song Maxwell’s Silver Hammer by the Beatles. The happy, upbeat mood of this song has a weird effect when you realize the subject matter of the story about a boy serial killer. It makes for a fascinating study in contrasting effects. Notice how the “Bang Bang Maxwell’s Silver Hammer…” of the chorus is explained and elaborated by the verses which move through time and tell the story. This is a feature of the verse – chorus which also tends to tell a story through time instead of a single thought or feeling such as the AABA form gives (see the song “Yesterday” for example).

The chorus is as simple as can be and right to the point. You have a song just as good in you. Bring it out

John Lennon Vs. Paul McCartney

Monday, December 14th, 2009

The Beatles Stereo Box Set

It is the age old Beatles argument: “Lennon or McCartney” Which songwriter was more essential to The Beatles music? It’s my opinion as an enormous Beatles fan that the real answer is “both!” It may sound like a cop-out but I actually believe it’s true.

I’m definitely not one of those people that goes out of his or her way to disparage the solo careers of John and Paul but I do think it’s obvious that they never reached the same level on their own as they did together with The Beatles (of course who has?) I think that’s pretty good evidence that there was something magical about their partnership that allowed the songs they wrote together to be more than the sum of the parts.

A lot of The Beatles greatest work wasn’t the tunes that John or Paul wrote on their own but were the songs that they worked on together. Many of The Beatles early singles such as “She Loves You” and “Love Me Do” were written as a team and some of their most timeless songs such as “A Day in the Life,” “We Can Work It Out,” & “I’ve Got a Feeling” consisted of different song segments that Paul & John wrote which were added together to form a whole song.

And even when a song was solely written by one or the other such as in the cases of “Hey Jude” and “Dear Prudence” there was still some great input by the other one.

For example with McCartney’s songs like “Hey Jude” and “Getting Better” John would give Paul very good lyrical advice. John told Paul to keep a lyric in the song “Hey Jude” that Paul felt wasn’t clear enough. Lennon added the “it couldn’t get much worse” line to “Getting Better” which helped to offset the relentless positivity of the rest of the lyrics.

McCartney added some amazing bass parts to John’s songs such as “Rain,” “Come Together,” and “Dear Prudence.” Try to imagine those songs without the bass, they wouldn’t be anywhere near as awesome!

The essential point that I’m trying to get across is that both Lennon & McCartney were necessary ingredients of what made The Beatles so great.
